What and Why of WordCamp in the Lehigh Valley

A few people who enjoyed using a particular computer program got together to exchange ideas and ask questions.  For many of them hearing from others ideas in person was a key to understanding more deeply the workings and possibilities of this program.

Of course, the program was WordPress, and the group of people was our local WordPress Meetup. Starting the fall of 2014, our meetings met at the local co-working space SoBeCoWorks.  Then as we’ve grown we’ve moved to NCC South Side or at the BridgWorks in Allentown.  Our meetings are open to all people at all levels of skills.  From brand new business folks to hardcore programmers.  Our monthly meeting turned into hosting a yearly WordCamp.  Having a WordCamp allows us to invite people to share what they have been doing with WordPress.  In the same spirit of our meetings, a WordCamp is a community of everyday people helping one another learn.

The best part of WordCamp is it’s only $20 for the day!  This event is kept inexpensive by the hard work of an all-volunteer staff (including the speakers), space provided by NCC and the generous sponsorship by local and national companies who support the WordPress community.

This year’s WordCamp will take place August 19, 2017.   Along with 12 speakers on a variety of WordPress related subjects, a 3-hour morning session is planned for those new to the WordPress platform.   Our hopes are that this event will not only be a great place to learn something new but an opportunity to network with people in our area!  We hope you can join us!  Get your ticket today!

New to WordPress? WordCamp Lehigh Valley is for you!

Don’t know if WordCamp is for you?  New to WordPress and still trying to understand it all?  This year, WordCamp Lehigh Valley will be offering a morning of “unboxing” a WordPress site.  Designed for those new to WordPress, this full morning track will be hands-on.   Attendees will have a fresh new install to learn and try new things on!  Your afternoon can be spent attending the other interesting sessions of WordCamp Lehigh Valley, visiting our “Happiness Bar”, and meeting other WordPress users from our area.

Getting Started with WordPress” will be taught by veteran teachers Kerch McConlogue and Reed Gustow.  When you purchase your ticket make sure you check “Are you interested in a beginners track?”  More information will be available soon.   Grab your laptop and tell your friends!  We’ll see you August 19th!

Reed Gustow has been working with WordPress since 2009. He is the Principal of a local WordPress development company, Delta Angel, which creates websites for individuals and small businesses as well as offering WordPress classes online. Reed has taught classes online through Delta Angel and WP Classroom as well as in person at 3rd Ward; a venue that offered technical classes on a wide variety of subjects. In addition, he has tutored many individuals in WordPress. Since 2010, Reed has held workshops on various aspects of WordPress at WordCamp Philadelphia, BarCamps, and PodCamps.

Kerch McConlogue, a retired ADHD coach and front end developer, has been writing code by hand for 16 years and using WordPress since version 1.5. Her passion is helping WordPress novices to understand the basic care and feeding of their own sites as well as to get past their fears of breaking the Internet.
